For instance, chloramphenicol blocks protein synthesis by bacterial and most mitochondrial ribosomes, but not by cytoplasmic ribosomes. Conversely, cycloheximide inhibits protein synthesis by eukaryotic cytoplasmic ribosomes but does not affect protein synthesis by mitochondrial ribosomes or bacterial ribosomes. In cultured mammalian cells the only proteins synthesized in the presence of cycloheximide are encoded by mtDNA and produced by mitochondrial ribosomes.
