While on medication for Cushing’s disease, it becomes extremely difficult for the dog to digest high fiber foods properly. Although fibers more or less are present in all types of foods, it is importance to avoid foods which are high in both fibers and carbohydrates like home-cooked rice and vegetables. Hence, even if your dog is on raw food or a natural food diet, you can reduce the the amount of fiber that goes into their body by giving them shredded vegetables. Shredded vegetables and fruits are comparatively low in fibers and also provide the dog with a fat-free diet.

Caution must be exercised in interpreting test findings. In patients with Cushing's disease, endogenous ACTH and cortisol production should be suppressed with high-dose (8-mg) dexamethasone, but the test lacks specificity, a clear cutoff value and diagnostic accuracy. 3 , 6 , 19 , 24 , 25 In fact, the pretest probability of finding a pituitary cause for ACTH-dependent Cushing's syndrome (85 to 90 percent) may exceed the diagnostic accuracy of the test. 4 , 25 Microadenomas are more likely to demonstrate high-dose dexamethasone suppression than macroadenomas (92 versus 56 percent in one study). 26

This disease hits close to home for me since my own horse Prophecy was diagnosed with it at the age of 9 using the morning and night cortisol levels testing method. I have had him on pergolide since that time, which was about four years ago. His symptoms at the time of diagnosis were for the most part very mild and very subtle. He had many episodes of "ain’t doing right,” laziness in the arena and a mild case of laminitis. His owner at that time, having had a dog with Cushing’s disease, asked me to test him. I’m happy to report that he is symptom free today. However, to be on the safe side, I’m starting Prophecy on higher dose vitamin E supplements and will test him using low-dose dexamethasone suppression combined with TRH stimulation. If he tests positive with that method, I will seriously consider trilostane for him.
